Brompton Chapel official statement

Partnering with The Royal Society of Sculptors, the ‘Celebration of Life’ exhibition at the Brompton Chapel
was a collective response to that time of year when the veil between the living and the dead is at its most permeable - as traditionally celebrated by festivals such the Day of the Dead and All Souls’ Day. Also supported by The Royal Parks and The Friends of Brompton Cemetery, the Chapel hosted two consecutive exhibitions to reflect the narrative of loss - from initial grief towards healing through community and the power of ritual.

‘The Vigil’, Saturday 26th - Tuesday 29th October, showcased four artist alumni from The Royal College of Art, each expressing their personal response to the theme through sculpture.

‘The Chorus’, Saturday 2nd - Sunday 3rd November, had these sculptures standing in the Chapel now decorated with works created by over 200 local primary school children, alongside a commissioned soundscape - reflecting the power of community, nature, and a focus on those joyful moments and memories we all hold dear. Line Maria le Fèvre comments on her work:

“I’ve chosen materials that represent the elements. In rituals there’s often a sensory led component that serves as the gateway to the spirit realm. I’m curious about this thinning of the veil, as celebrated around the world during the exact crossover between autumn equinox and winter solstice. We transcend through light, though this is the time of the year when we enter darkness. The veil is a structure that engage with both light and shadow, the earthly and the divine. I think of these draped translucent layers as a veil in between our worlds of the perceivable and the ethereal, as an opening to another realm, it goes both ways, and makes visible that which is of the other”.
